LOCAL authority leaders across the region have confirmed that following constructive discussions with government the North East will stay at High Alert Level 2.

Due to the combined efforts of residents, businesses and communities, since the new restrictions were introduced across the region on September 18, public health data is now showing signs that the number of Covid-19 cases are stabilising.
Council leaders expressed their thanks to everyone for the role they have played in tackling the virus but warned that to avoid further restrictions, it is vital that everyone continues to follows the law and restriction guidance.
A spokesperson on behalf of council leaders across the North East said: “We are at a critical point and cannot afford to let the virus rip through our communities – we need everyone to do their bit – there is absolutely no room for complacency.
“We will continue to engage with government about the need for crucial economic support as well as localised control of Test and Trace, but we welcome the fact we are being listened to and we are committed to ongoing, constructive dialogue.”
The news was also welcomed by health officials at NHS County Durham Clinical Commissioning Group.
Chief Officer Dr Stewart Findlay added: “With Covid-19 cases showing signs of stabilising across the region we now have a real opportunity slow down the spread of the virus.
“However, we need to be very careful if we are to avoid a further increase in the risk level and even more restrictive local lockdown measures.
“I’d urge everyone to continue to do their bit and take the necessary steps to protect themselves, protect their families and protect their community.”
